Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, October 27, 2025 — The family of a 28-year-old woman doctor, who allegedly committed suicide in Satara district, Maharashtra, last week, has demanded the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT)to probe the case and insisted that the trial be held in a fast-track court in Beed district.
The deceased doctor, originally from Beed district, was posted at a government hospital in Satara. She was found hanging in a hotel room in Phaltan town on Thursday night. According to reports, she left a suicide note on her palm, alleging sexual assault by police sub-inspector Gopal Badane and mental harassment by Prashant Bankar, a software engineer. Both individuals were arrested on Saturday.
Family Demands SIT and Local Trial
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, a female relative of the doctor said:
“We have some demands for the Chief Minister. An SIT should be formed at the earliest, and we will not go to Phaltan to record our statements. The case should be tried in a fast-track court in Beed. The allegations that are being made against my sister should be verified by checking the CDR.”
The family expressed concern that the doctor’s previous complaints had not been acted upon and called for a fresh inquiry into her allegations.
A male relative raised doubts regarding the surrender of suspended sub-inspector Gopal Badane, questioning the sequence of events.
“Police kept searching for him. They formed five teams and sent them in different directions. Then how did the accused surrender a day before the Chief Minister’s visit? We think he destroyed all the evidence and then surrendered,” the relative said.
Background
The doctor had served at a government hospital in Satara while residing in Beed. Her death has drawn widespread attention due to the allegations of sexual assault and mental harassment outlined in her suicide note.
Authorities had arrested the two accused — the sub-inspector and the software engineer — but the family insists that the investigation requires a more robust and impartial mechanism, such as an SIT, and that proceedings should be conducted in Beed, closer to the family and the community familiar with the case.
The case has sparked debate over police accountability, protection of whistleblowers, and the need for timely investigation of complaints, especially in cases involving public servants.
Current Status
- Both accused have been arrested and are in custody.
- Family demands SIT-led investigation.
- Request for fast-track trial in Beed to ensure speedy justice.
- Verification of allegations through call detail records (CDR) and other digital evidence has been requested.
The Maharashtra government has yet to officially respond to the family’s demands for an SIT and relocation of the trial, but the case continues to attract significant media and public attention due to its serious allegations against law enforcement personnel.
