Woman Shot Inside Gurugram Club After Refusing Marriage Proposal, Two Accused Arrested

Gurugram: A shocking incident of violence unfolded inside a nightclub in Gurugram when a 25-year-old woman was shot allegedly for refusing a marriage proposal, police said on Thursday. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of December 20 on MG Road, has once again raised serious concerns over women’s safety and crimes driven by rejection and obsession.

According to the police, they received information about a woman sustaining gunshot injuries at a club located in the Sector 29 area in the early hours of Friday. When officers reached the spot, they found that the injured woman had already been rushed to a private hospital for treatment. Due to the seriousness of her injuries, she was initially declared unfit to give a statement.

The victim was later identified as Kalpana, a 25-year-old woman who worked at the club. Her husband, a resident of Najafgarh in Delhi, subsequently approached the police and lodged a formal complaint detailing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In his complaint, the husband alleged that his wife was shot by a man identified as Tushar, also known as Jonty, a resident of Sangam Vihar in Delhi. He stated that Kalpana had gone to work at the club on the evening of December 19 as usual. Around 1 am, she called him in distress and informed him that she had been shot.

The complainant further told police that Tushar had been troubling his wife for several months. “Around a month ago, Tushar came to our house, had a fight with us and then left,” he stated in his complaint, indicating that the accused was already known to the family and had earlier created a disturbance.

Based on the husband’s complaint, the Gurugram police registered a case at the Sector 29 police station under relevant sections of law related to attempt to murder and criminal intimidation. Senior officers then constituted a special team to investigate the matter and track down the accused, who had fled after the shooting.

During the course of the investigation, the police analysed CCTV footage from the club and nearby areas, collected statements from staff members and witnesses, and worked on technical surveillance to trace the suspects’ movements. Acting on these leads, a crime unit team traced the accused to Baraut in Uttar Pradesh.

Police said that two accused — Tushar alias Jonty (25) and his friend Shubham alias Jony (24), both residents of Sangam Vihar — were arrested from Baraut. The arrests were made after sustained efforts by the investigation team, which had been tracking their location since the incident.

During interrogation, Tushar allegedly confessed to the crime and revealed details of his relationship with the victim. According to police, he claimed that he had befriended Kalpana around six months ago and gradually developed feelings for her. He wanted to marry her and allegedly proposed to her multiple times.

However, the woman repeatedly refused his proposal, making it clear that she was not interested in marrying him. Police said this rejection angered Tushar and led to growing resentment. Despite the refusal, he continued to pursue her and allegedly pressured her to change her decision.

Police alleged that on the night of December 19, Tushar, accompanied by his friend Shubham, went to the club where Kalpana worked. He reportedly confronted her again and proposed marriage once more. When she refused yet again, an argument broke out between them.

In a fit of rage, police said, Tushar allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Kalpana inside the club, causing panic among staff and patrons present at the time. After firing at her, the accused fled the spot with the help of his friend.

Kalpana was immediately taken to a nearby private hospital, where she received emergency medical care. Doctors said her condition was serious but stable. Police officials stated that her statement would be recorded once she is medically fit, as it will be crucial to strengthening the prosecution’s case.

Both accused are currently in police custody and are being questioned to ascertain further details, including the source of the weapon used in the crime. Police are also investigating whether Shubham played an active role in planning or facilitating the attack or was merely accompanying the main accused.

“The accused have been arrested and further investigation is underway,” a senior police officer said, adding that additional charges may be invoked based on the findings of the probe and the victim’s statement.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern, particularly as it highlights the dangers women continue to face for asserting their personal choices. Crimes stemming from rejection, often described as obsession-driven violence, remain a persistent problem despite repeated calls for stricter action and social reform.

Police officials reiterated that such acts of violence will be dealt with firmly and that the accused will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Meanwhile, the investigation continues, with authorities examining all aspects of the case to ensure that justice is delivered swiftly.
