Yiaga Africa, a civic group promoting democracy and good governance, has called on citizens and residents of Ogun State to actively demand accountability, responsive governance, and quality representation from their elected officials.
Speaking at the People’s Assembly and civic engagement forum in Abeokuta for stakeholders of the Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency, Senior Program Officer Antonia Onda stressed that democracy goes beyond elections. She highlighted the importance of constantly monitoring and holding representatives accountable for their stewardship.
“People’s Assembly differs from the conventional Town Hall Meeting. It’s about follow-ups, sustained engagement, and ensuring that leaders implement visible, life-changing projects in communities,” Onda explained.
The federal lawmaker representing Ifo/Ewekoro Federal Constituency, Ibrahim Isiaka, represented by Mr. Abiodun Adeleye, emphasized that the forum strengthened constituents’ understanding of democracy. He assured participants of his commitment to embrace suggestions that improve representation and implement meaningful projects in the constituency.
In attendance were traditional rulers, religious leaders, trade association heads, Community Development Committee members, transport unions, people living with disabilities, students, artisans, and representatives of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), highlighting broad community engagement in the initiative.
Yiaga Africa urged that accountability should be the watchword in governance, encouraging citizens to actively participate in shaping policies and ensuring that elected leaders deliver on campaign promises.
