“You’re Not Alone” – Obi Extends Sympathy to Fire Outbreak Victims Across Nigeria

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed heartfelt condolences to Nigerians affected by recent fire outbreaks, acknowledging the loss of lives and property across the country.

In a message posted on his verified X account on Saturday, Obi assured victims that they are not alone, emphasizing that the nation stands with them during this difficult time.

Obi also highlighted the urgent need for improved fire safety measures and called for a national emergency response system, particularly in markets and high-rise buildings, to better protect lives and assets.

He said:

“The devastating fire at the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) Building in Balogun, Lagos, which claimed precious lives, serves as a stark reminder that we must strengthen fire management. Recent incidents at Haiba Plaza in Malumfashi, Kure Market in Minna, Gusau warehouse in Zamfara, Buzaye Garage in Sokoto, Terminus Market in Plateau, Sabuwar Lale Furniture Market in Kano, and Lagos University Teaching Hospital’s College of Nursing Sciences hostel show that urgent reforms are needed.”

Obi further urged the government to equip fire services with the necessary resources, professionalism, and responsiveness, while extending solidarity to affected families in Katsina, Niger, Zamfara, Sokoto, Plateau, Kano, and Lagos.

He concluded:

“May we honor the memories of those we’ve lost by committing to a future where lives are protected. Let this be a catalyst for transforming our emergency services into institutions that are competent, compassionate, and reliable.”
