The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has directed all domestic airlines to provide refreshments to passengers affected by flight delays during the Yuletide season. The move comes after reports that some carriers were failing to offer even light care during prolonged disruptions.
NCAA spokesperson, Michael Achimugu, emphasized on X (formerly Twitter) that passengers must be offered refreshments regardless of the cause of delays. “It has been reported that some domestic airlines are not offering passengers the simple care of light refreshment during lengthy flight delays,” he said. “We have informed all operators that refreshments MUST be given to passengers caught in such unpleasant disruptions. This will be strictly monitored.”
The NCAA acknowledged a global increase in flight delays and cancellations but stressed that regulations require airlines to care for passengers, particularly given the heavy travel volume in December.
Meanwhile, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) explained that most disruptions in the country are infrastructure-related rather than the fault of airlines. Spokesperson Professor Obiora Okonkwo noted issues such as faulty conveyor belts and boarding congestion as contributing factors. He added that airlines compensate passengers according to ticket conditions and regulations.
“Delays are not unique to Nigeria. Customers have rights depending on their ticket type, including refunds for refundable tickets,” Okonkwo said. “Operators ensure maintenance is carried out when Aircraft on the Ground (AOG) issues occur, which is sometimes unavoidable.”
The NCAA’s directive aims to safeguard passenger welfare and ensure airlines comply with care requirements during peak travel periods.
