Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet US President Donald Trump in Florida this Sunday to discuss the latest round of negotiations aimed at ending nearly four years of war with Russia. The meeting will focus on a revised US-brokered peace plan, alongside proposals for long-term US security guarantees for Ukraine.
Zelensky has voiced concerns that Moscow “doesn’t want peace”, citing a series of intense Russian attacks on Kyiv over the weekend. On Friday night, a 10-hour barrage of missiles and drones struck Ukraine’s capital, killing two civilians and injuring 32 others, according to local authorities. Additional strikes occurred on Saturday night, causing significant damage to energy infrastructure and leaving 40% of residential buildings without heating.
Key Issues on the Agenda
During the Florida meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, Zelensky is expected to raise two critical issues: security guarantees for Ukraine and territorial concessions, areas where Russia has historically refused compromise.
The talks will also address the 20-point peace plan, a revised version of an earlier 28-point proposal drafted by US special envoy Steve Witkoff, which critics argued was overly favorable to Russia. The plan considers the establishment of a “free economic zone” in the contested Donbas region, where Moscow currently controls approximately 75% of Donetsk and 99% of Luhansk.
Although Zelensky has suggested troop withdrawals from Donbas if Russia reciprocates, the Kremlin has not responded to this offer. Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Ukraine is “in no hurry to resolve this conflict peacefully” and that Russia would achieve its objectives militarily if Kyiv does not engage seriously.
Ongoing Russian Attacks
Over the weekend, Russia launched almost 500 drones and 40 missiles toward Kyiv, targeting energy facilities and civilian infrastructure. Ukrainian officials reported extensive damage, including apartment buildings and homes set on fire, with one BBC journalist’s high-rise apartment struck during the attacks.
Poland, which shares a 530 km border with Ukraine, prepared its fighter jets, air defense systems, and radar surveillance, though no violations of Polish airspace were reported. Meanwhile, Russia claimed its air defense systems intercepted nearly 200 Ukrainian drones over multiple regions, including Moscow. Ukrainian forces repelled 30 drones on Saturday night, with no casualties reported.
International Support for Ukraine
Zelensky has coordinated with European leaders to solidify diplomatic priorities ahead of the Florida summit, emphasizing the need for strong negotiating positions. Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz affirmed Kyiv’s full support from European and NATO allies, signaling continued international backing for Ukraine’s security and sovereignty.
Trump’s Role
President Trump has indicated he expects to review the new peace plan draft during the Florida meeting, cautioning that Zelensky “doesn’t have anything until I approve it.” Trump expressed optimism about the negotiations, stating he expects productive discussions with both Zelensky and Putin in the near future.
The upcoming summit is being closely watched by the international community as Ukraine seeks lasting security guarantees and territorial resolutions, while ongoing Russian attacks demonstrate the fragility of the peace process.
