
At least 17 soldiers of the Nigerien National Gendarmerie were reportedly killed in an attack by fighters of the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS).
Security expert Zagazola Makama reported on X that the incident occurred on Wednesday at a security post in Garbougna, along the Terra–Niamey axis.
According to preliminary reports, the assailants, heavily armed, used direct fire, improvised explosive devices, and maneuver tactics to overwhelm the gendarmerie post. Among the casualties were a team leader and a captain, while 34 others sustained serious injuries.
Multiple operational vehicles were destroyed, and the attackers seized military equipment and weapons before withdrawing. Reinforcement teams were deployed, and aerial surveillance was activated to track the fleeing militants.
