The African Action Congress (AAC), FCT Chapter, has strongly criticized FCT Minister Nyesom Wike over his directive banning staff of the FCT Administration from using mobile phones during office hours.
In a statement signed by Agena Robert Ande, Chairman, and Salako Kayode, Secretary of the AAC FCT Chapter, the party described Wike’s order as “draconian,” “egregious,” and a gross affront to democracy”, warning that it reflects authoritarian tendencies.
“The African Action Congress (AAC) FCT Chapter is appalled by the blanket ban on mobile phones, which attempts to muzzle public servants and stifle their right to communicate,” the statement read. The party argued that the directive reduces FCT workers to servitude, undermining their basic human rights and dignity.
The AAC accused Wike of arrogance and abuse of power, citing his “propensity for insults, abuses, and false narratives against Nigerians” as part of a broader pattern of disregard for democratic norms.
Reaffirming its commitment to socialist ideals and democratic principles, the party demanded that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu take immediate action to remove Wike from office, describing his continued tenure as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
The statement concluded with a call to action: “Nigeria is not a banana republic. We will not stand idly by while democratic values are trampled. All well-meaning Nigerians must join us in condemning Wike’s actions and demanding accountability.”
