Trump Launches National AI Initiative to Build Platform Using Federal Scientific Data

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a sweeping executive order that sets in motion a government-wide initiative to create a unified artificial intelligence platform capable of leveraging massive federal scientific datasets. The plan, known as the Genesis Mission, aims to accelerate breakthroughs across science, engineering, energy, health, and national security by using advanced AI models trained on government-owned data.

Genesis Mission: A National Push to Transform Scientific Research

The newly announced initiative seeks to merge federal supercomputing resources with extensive scientific datasets to develop powerful foundation models tailored for scientific discovery. These models would support AI agents capable of:

  • designing new experiments,
  • accelerating complex simulations,
  • automating research workflows,
  • and rapidly testing scientific hypotheses.

The White House says the effort is intended to dramatically shorten discovery timelines — potentially compressing research that once took years into days or even hours.

DOE to Lead AI Supercomputing and Data Integration

Trump has directed the Department of Energy (DOE) and the network of U.S. National Laboratories to coordinate the effort. The DOE will oversee the creation of a closed-loop AI research platform designed to connect the nation’s most advanced supercomputers with enormous volumes of scientific data.

This system would develop specialized foundation models to support next-generation technologies, as well as robotic laboratories capable of automated experimentation.

Top White House Science Officials: AI Will Unlock Federal Data

Michael Kratsios, head of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said the Genesis Mission will “unlock the power of federal scientific datasets” and “massively accelerate the rate of scientific breakthrough.”

He highlighted the project’s potential to produce high-impact results in areas such as:

  • protein folding and biomedical modeling,
  • nuclear fusion plasma analysis,
  • quantum research,
  • and materials science.

According to Kratsios, the mission will help the United States cement a leadership position in global AI-driven innovation.

Energy Secretary Highlights Strategic Importance

Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized that while private companies have invested heavily in AI, the federal government plays a unique role in scientific discovery. Many of the datasets required to train cutting-edge scientific AI models exist only within the national laboratory system — making government involvement essential.

He noted that the Genesis Mission will focus on strategic national priorities, including:

  • critical materials and energy security,
  • nuclear fission and fusion research,
  • biotechnology,
  • quantum information science,
  • semiconductors and microelectronics,
  • and advanced space technologies.

AI as a Central Pillar of Trump’s Economic and Security Agenda

Trump has consistently framed the development of advanced AI as central to America’s ability to compete with China. Earlier this year, he ordered the creation of an AI Action Plan aimed at making the United States “the world capital of artificial intelligence.”

The new executive order continues this direction, emphasizing rapid AI deployment, fewer regulatory obstacles, and leveraging federal research assets to fuel innovation. Trump also rolled back an AI safety order enacted under former President Joe Biden, signaling a shift toward faster expansion and fewer restrictions.

The announcement comes amid massive private-sector investments, including record-breaking deals between Microsoft, Nvidia, and AI startup Anthropic.
