Former military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd) has charged the newly elected PDP National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki, SAN, to rebuild the party, correct past mistakes, and position it as a stabilising force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The directive came during a courtesy visit to Babangida’s Minna residence by Turaki and selected PDP National Working Committee (NWC) members. The visit also doubled as a condolence call due to recent abductions in Niger State.
Babangida commended the PDP leadership for supporting Niger State during its crisis and reaffirmed the party’s deep national roots. Drawing on his experience in statecraft, he advised Turaki to prioritise tact, inclusive leadership, and broad consultation in rebuilding the party. He also highlighted the enduring impact of political parties in communities, recounting a historical anecdote to illustrate their societal influence.
In response, Turaki expressed gratitude, pledging to reset the party, strengthen its organs, and restore its winning spirit ahead of 2027. Babangida further encouraged the NWC to maintain unity, rebuild trust, and stabilise structures nationwide in preparation for electoral contests.
A vote of thanks was delivered by former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, while other delegation members included Deputy National Chairmen, National Secretary Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, Kaduna PDP Chairman Edward Percy Masha, former Minister Musa Bala, Niger State PDP officials, and the immediate past chairman of the state chapter, Tanko Beji.
