San Diego has completed the signing of Scotland international Lewis Morgan from Major League Soccer rivals New York Red Bulls, marking a fresh chapter in the winger’s career.
Morgan, 29, spent four seasons with New York Red Bulls after moving from Inter Miami in 2021. During his time in New York, the Greenock-born forward made 82 appearances, starting 73 times, and contributed 31 goals and 10 assists. His performances earned him the supporters’ player of the year award twice, a distinction he described as a career highlight.
A Fresh Start in San Diego
The move to San Diego, this year’s Western Conference champions, comes for a fee that could reach £820,000. Morgan is contracted for the 2026 season, with the club holding options to extend for an additional two years.
Speaking about the transfer, Morgan said:
“It is tough to say bye to New York, but I know I can look back on my time here and know that I gave absolutely everything I had to this club. I played as if I was one of the fans and tried to bring that energy onto the pitch.”
Morgan made just three appearances this season for New York due to a knee injury followed by a hamstring problem, as the Red Bulls finished 10th in the Eastern Conference.
MLS Career and International Experience
A former Celtic forward, Morgan has represented Scotland seven times, most recently against Finland in June 2024. Known for his pace, technical skill, and versatility across the front three, he is expected to add depth and creativity to San Diego’s attacking options.
San Diego Sporting Director Tyler Heaps commented:
“Lewis is an attacker who can play across the front three and brings qualities that will add to our group in 2026. He’s proven he can contribute goals and assists in this league.”
Morgan now joins a team coached by Mikey Varas, who led San Diego to a fourth-place overall finish in the MLS this season. His experience in both MLS and European football makes him a valuable addition as the club looks to challenge for silverware in 2026.
