Customs, NDLEA Bust Cocaine Smuggling Ring in Lagos, Seize 30.1kg

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Apapa Area Command, in partnership with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has successfully dismantled an international drug trafficking operation in Lagos.

On Friday, January 2, 2026, officers intercepted 30.1 kilograms of cocaine hidden aboard the Marshall Islands-flagged vessel MV Aruna at Apapa Port’s Greenview Terminal. The seizure marked the first major enforcement action of the new year and highlighted the sophisticated tactics used by smugglers targeting Nigeria’s busiest seaport.

Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, Area Controller of Apapa Command, praised the joint operation, saying it demonstrates the agencies’ “vigilance, professionalism, and intelligence-led enforcement.” He added that the interception sends a bold message that smuggling attempts, whether disguised as imports, exports, or transit cargo, will not succeed.

The NDLEA has taken custody of the seized cocaine for further investigation and prosecution. This bust follows two recent major seizures: 25.5kg of cocaine hidden aboard another vessel and 1,187kg of high-grade cannabis smuggled in vehicles in December 2025.

Oshoba emphasized that Apapa Port Command remains committed to facilitating legitimate trade while protecting national security.
