The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reaffirmed that former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, remains innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, EFCC Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwuajeren, emphasized that criminal prosecutions in Nigeria are a legal process that requires the presentation of evidence and witnesses before the court.
“The trial is still ongoing. We are presenting witnesses and evidence, but it is not the Commission that decides the matter—it is the court,” Uwuajeren said.
He noted that under the Nigerian Constitution, anyone standing trial is presumed innocent until the case is proven in court. Uwuajeren also clarified that Bello’s position within his political party is separate from the charges filed against him, stressing that the EFCC does not engage in party politics.
“Our responsibility is to prosecute the charges faithfully before the court. Whatever happens within the party is the party’s business. EFCC is not a political organization; we are enforcing the law,” he added.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to ensuring fair justice for both the prosecution and the defense, affirming that the trial process is proceeding according to legal standards.
