Ekiti House of Assembly Plans N1.2 Billion Spending on Chairs and Tables Despite Previous Outlay

The Ekiti State House of Assembly is set to spend N1.2 billion on executive chairs, tables, and office furniture in 2026, even after N470 million was already expended on similar items between January and September 2025.

Budget details reveal that the funds are earmarked for 700 executive chairs, 600 tables, 200 chamber tables, 100 cabinets, 50 office file shelves, and 12 sets of chairs. Additionally, N800 million is proposed for the purchase of three 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado vehicles and 30 Toyota Corolla cars.

The budget also includes N300 million for the construction of the governor’s and deputy governor’s lodges in Asokoro, Abuja, on top of the N470 million already spent. Furthermore, a N320 million contract was awarded for a guest house chalet within the Government House, highlighting a continued focus on government housing projects.

These allocations have drawn scrutiny as many key government agencies face capital funding gaps. The 2024 audited financial statements reveal that 35 government agencies, including the Ministries of Education, Health, and Local Government Affairs, among others, received no capital expenditure funding, despite a combined budget of N3.3 billion.

Reports show that contracts worth billions of naira have been awarded to permanent secretaries for projects such as the Ekiti State Airport Instrument Landing System (N3.3 billion), procurement of an eighteen-seater bus and motorcycles (N75.1 million), and airport infrastructure works ranging from N45 million to N281 million, raising questions about budget priorities and transparency.

The developments have sparked calls for greater prudence and accountability in the management of public funds, particularly as essential government agencies continue to go without necessary resources.
