Rangers and Motherwell fans will see their away ticket allocations reduced by 50 seats for upcoming matches following repeated breaches of Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) rules regarding pyrotechnics. The sanctions carry a warning that the penalty could double if further incidents occur.
Aberdeen and Hibernian have also been issued suspended penalties after failing to prevent illegal pyro displays by their supporters.
Details of the Sanctions
The SPFL found that all four Scottish Premiership clubs – Rangers, Motherwell, Aberdeen, and Hibernian – failed to take reasonable measures to prevent supporters from engaging in unacceptable conduct. In addition, the clubs did not implement proportionate disciplinary measures against fans responsible for the pyrotechnics.
For Rangers and Motherwell, previous suspended punishments have now been triggered, resulting in the following sanctions:
- Rangers: 50-ticket reduction for their away game against Hibernian on 1 February 2026
- Motherwell: 50-ticket reduction for their trip to Dundee on 4 February 2026
Both clubs must also cover the cost of the missing tickets for the home clubs.
The SPFL also imposed a suspended 100-ticket reduction for future away matches if either club breaches the rules again. Hibernian and Aberdeen face the same suspended measures until June 2026.
Recent Pyro Incidents
The SPFL’s review examined five recent matches involving large-scale pyrotechnic displays by travelling supporters:
- Motherwell vs Hibernian – 25 November
- Falkirk vs Motherwell – 3 December
- Dundee vs Aberdeen – 6 December
- Kilmarnock vs Rangers – 6 December
- Rangers vs Motherwell – 27 December
Key findings included:
- Motherwell fans set off around 20 devices per display.
- Rangers pyro displays at Rugby Park injured a child.
- Hibernian fans threw devices at players and staff at Fir Park.
- Aberdeen supporters caused pitch damage and injuries, including burn and respiratory issues for children.
The report concluded:
“These incidents caused a health and safety risk to fellow supporters, players, and match staff, as well as significant inconvenience to thousands of fans watching in the stadium and at home.”
Club Responses
Both Rangers and Aberdeen have released statements urging their supporters to stop using pyrotechnics during matches, emphasizing safety and compliance with SPFL regulations.
