Aiyedatiwa, PDP clash over alleged support for Tinubu in Ondo

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have engaged in a public spat over claims that the governor donated ₦100 million of public funds to the Tinubu Support Group (TSG) to mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election across Ondo’s 18 local government areas.

The PDP, through spokesman Wande Ajayi, accused Aiyedatiwa of misusing state resources for personal political gain, describing the alleged donation as a “reckless abuse of public trust.” According to the opposition, the funds were allegedly channelled to two of the governor’s political allies – a former minister and an ex-commissioner from the Central and Southern senatorial districts – ahead of the next general election.

“At a time when Adekunle Ajasin University lecturers have downed tools, hospitals are inhabitable, and public schools are costlier than private, the governor is busy throwing ₦100 million at political loyalists,” the PDP said.
“It is scandalous that a government that cannot provide water in rural communities, equip hospitals, or reopen its universities can suddenly find ₦100 million to fund a political project.”

The opposition challenged Aiyedatiwa to publish detailed government expenditure to demonstrate transparency and accountability over alleged political spending.

Governor Aiyedatiwa dismissed the claims, calling the PDP a “dead party” and insisting the allegation was baseless and politically motivated. Through his Special Assistant on New Media, Sunday Abire, the governor said:

“For the record, TSG is a group of personalities in the state who can wilfully donate resources to promote President Tinubu’s vision. Let’s even agree their jejune allegation of ₦100 million is true – TSG has over a hundred members who can contribute a million naira each without troubling the governor. It’s pitiable that the PDP finds news value in such a baseless claim.”

Aiyedatiwa further advised the PDP to focus on fixing internal party issues rather than chasing social media relevance through political allegations.

The clash highlights rising tensions between the Ondo APC-led state government and the opposition PDP ahead of upcoming elections.
