Abia: Ex-President-General Assassinated Three Days After Pleading for Help

Mr. Igwe Akuma Akwu, former President-General of the National Association of Ohafia Students (NAOS), was shot dead by unknown gunmen on January 2, 2026 in Ohafia, Abia State. The attack sparked anger and destruction in his community.

Social media posts by Akwu three days before his death revealed he had warned authorities that his life and those of his people were under threat. He claimed he had been beaten by thugs in January 2025, his car was set ablaze in October 2025, and his five-year-old cousin went missing after a violent attack.

The Abia State Police Command said suspects were arrested and two tactical teams were deployed to restore order.

Human rights groups and youth organizations, including FENRAD, have called for a thorough investigation and accountability. FENRAD’s Executive Director, Nelson Nnanna Nwafor, demanded the arrest and prosecution of those responsible and urged a review of security responses to early warnings.
