
Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has expressed deep sorrow over a tragic boat accident in Nguru Local Government Area, which claimed 25 lives. The incident also left 14 people missing and 13 rescued.
The mishap occurred on Saturday, January 3, 2026, when a canoe carrying 52 passengers from Adiyani in Jigawa State to Garbi in Nguru capsized.
Governor Buni condoled with the families, prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls, and urged that survivors receive immediate treatment. He also directed the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide support to affected families and continue search and rescue operations.
He cautioned against overloading canoes and vehicles, warning that such practices lead to avoidable tragedies.
