Former Abia State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Don Ubani, has revealed that local governments in the state are being “hijacked,” with allocated funds failing to reach the councils.
Speaking on Channels Television’s ‘The Morning Brief’ on Wednesday, Ubani highlighted the severe impact of the funding shortfall on governance and public services.
He explained, “Nothing is happening in Abia State. The local governments have been hijacked; their funds don’t get to the council.”
Ubani cited the deteriorating condition of the High Court in Okwa West LGA, which has been overrun by weeds. Court workers have reportedly threatened relocation to Aba due to the council’s inability to maintain the premises.
He criticized the state government’s handling of administrative appointments, noting, “This is because the council has no money to clear the weeds in and around the court. This is the governor that knows that constitutionally speaking, the positions of Permanent Secretary are political.”
