ACF@25: Northern Leaders Call for Bold Reset on Development, Security

Northern elders, political leaders, and cultural figures have urged decisive action to tackle longstanding insecurity and underdevelopment in the region, during the 25th anniversary of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) held in Kaduna.

The silver jubilee celebration featured technology and entrepreneurship exhibitions, women-focused pavilions, cultural nights, and an awards ceremony, all designed to showcase the North’s potential and celebrate innovation.

Opening the event, ACF Board of Trustees Chairman, Alhaji Bashir Dalhatu (Wazirin Dutse), emphasised the need for modern development models that empower youth and reduce inequality. “We must begin in earnest to plunge into modern developmental efforts,” he said, highlighting platforms created by the forum to mentor young entrepreneurs and guide innovative projects.

Dalhatu stressed that inclusive development—not just economic growth—should define the North’s future, advocating for unity under the mantra: “North is one people, one North.” He also acknowledged security challenges and called for more effective strategies from security agencies.

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), described the milestone as a moment for reflection and urged the region to engage youth in the creative economy as a critical tool to reverse development deficits. “Northern Nigeria is a microcosm of the nation. When one part of the country develops, that progress translates to others,” he said.

Other speakers included representatives of Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, NSA Nuhu Ribadu, and CDS, all highlighting the importance of national unity and strategic tourism as a means of fostering security and community development.

A high-level roundtable on “Tourism for Security”, chaired by Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, reinforced the link between economic opportunity and stability. “Tourism and security are inseparable. Visitors will not explore our heritage sites or cultural festivals if they fear for their safety,” she noted, stressing that insecurity often stems from exclusion, poverty, and marginalisation.

Other dignitaries at the event included former Minister of Information Alhaji Lai Mohammed, former Kaduna State Governor Ramalan Yero, Nasiru Gwamdu Sardaunan Dutse, and the Wazirin Zazzau, Alhaji Muhammad Inuwa, among other northern elders.

The ACF’s silver jubilee celebration highlighted the need for innovative, inclusive, and security-conscious strategies, calling on the North to embrace a reset that ensures sustainable growth, stability, and unity for the region’s future.
