Amazon’s Zoox to Recall 332 U.S. Vehicles Due to Self-Driving Software Glitch, NHTSA Says

Dec 23, 2025 – U.S. – Amazon’s self-driving vehicle unit, Zoox, Inc., announced a recall of 332 vehicles in the United States after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified a software error in its automated driving systems (ADS). The issue could cause Zoox vehicles to cross the yellow center line at intersections or stop unexpectedly in front of oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of collisions.

The recall affects vehicles equipped with ADS software versions released prior to December 19, 2025. Zoox has issued a free software update to resolve the problem and ensure the vehicles track nearby pedestrians accurately while preventing unsafe movement near people.

This latest recall follows a previous May 2025 recall of 270 Zoox vehicles, in which the company issued a software update to improve pedestrian detection and movement restrictions after a minor crash in San Francisco. NHTSA had certified Zoox vehicles for demonstration purposes in August 2025, closing an earlier probe initiated in 2022 to assess compliance with federal safety standards for self-driving vehicles.

Zoox, acquired by Amazon.com Inc., continues to expand its autonomous vehicle testing and development across the U.S., emphasizing safety upgrades through regular software updates. The recall highlights the challenges facing autonomous vehicle makers as they navigate regulatory requirements, complex real-world conditions, and safety assurance for fully automated driving systems.

Industry experts note that software-related recalls in autonomous vehicles remain an important part of building trust among consumers and regulators, as the technology evolves and scales.
