Anambra Lawmaker Ejected from Assembly During Budget Presentation Sitting

Mr. Bernard Udemezue, the suspended lawmaker representing Ayamelum Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, was forcibly removed from the legislative chambers after attempting to resume duties following a three-month suspension.

Udemezue was ejected to prevent him from participating in the budget presentation sitting, where Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo was scheduled to present the 2026 appropriation bill.

The lawmaker had been suspended about four months ago for allegedly sharing details of assembly members’ earnings on social media—an action deemed inappropriate by the House leadership. The suspension was set for three months.

Ahead of the Governor’s arrival, security personnel—including the Police, DSS, and NSCDC—were stationed at the Assembly complex in anticipation of the budget presentation. Lawmakers, government officials, commissioners, special advisers, media aides, agency CEOs, traditional rulers, party faithful, and representatives from civil society organizations were all present.

The drama unfolded when Deputy Speaker Mr. Chukwuma Okoye and Mr. Innocent Ojike, representing Oyi Constituency, approached Udemezue with security personnel and escorted him out of the chambers. Supporters of the lawmaker who had accompanied him were also removed from the plenary by the House leadership.

Sources told DAILY POST that the lawmaker was removed because he had allegedly failed to follow the proper procedures for resuming after his suspension ended.

Governor Soludo was still expected to deliver his budget speech at the time of reporting, while Udemezue was reportedly held at the new legislative building.

In his defense, Udemezue maintained that he had followed due process and submitted the necessary letters to the appropriate authorities before attempting to resume his duties.
