Assam Sees Dramatic Drop in New Year’s Eve Road Fatalities, CM Credits Strict Enforcement

Guwahati, Jan 2, 2026: Assam recorded just one death on New Year’s Eve 2025, a sharp decline from 12 fatalities four years ago, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, attributing the improvement to strict enforcement of traffic rules.

Sarma emphasized the goal of achieving zero road deaths next year, stating on X:

“No bigger satisfaction than saving precious lives! 4 years back, we started a mission to strictly enforce road safety measures on New Year’s eve to reduce accidents & save lives. The result? Just 1 unfortunate fatality on 31 Dec 2025.”

Traffic and enforcement highlights:

  • Guwahati city: No accidents reported on December 31.
  • Revenue from fines: Over ₹50.21 crore collected for traffic violations in 2025.
  • Accidents: Total 1,026 in 2025, down from 1,218 in 2024.
  • Cases registered: 5,786 in 2025, reduced from 7,412 in 2024 and 9,393 in 2023.
  • Pending cases: 2,882 at the end of 2025, down sharply from 35,396 in 2021.
  • Charge sheet filing rate: Increased to 68.34% in 2025 (42.56% in 2024, 19.13% in 2023).
  • Conviction rate: Rose to 28.5% in 2025 from 4% in 2021; cases under the BNS saw an 86.08% conviction rate.

Other crime statistics in Guwahati for 2025:

  • Property-related cases: 1,854 (down from 2,804 in 2024).
  • Vehicle theft: 553 (down from 1,118 in 2024).
  • Mobile theft: 203 cases, all suspects arrested; 1,159 stolen phones recovered.
  • Drug-related cases: 406 registered, 555 arrests; contraband market value ₹28.86 crore.

Joint Commissioner of Police Ankur Jain credited year-round traffic safety initiatives and intensified checks during celebrations for the steady reduction in fatalities and accidents.

This marks a consistent decline in New Year’s Eve fatalities in Assam:

  • 2022: 12 deaths
  • 2023: 6 deaths
  • 2024: 5 deaths
  • 2025: 1 death

The state government continues to focus on road safety, law enforcement efficiency, and public awareness campaignsto sustain and improve these results.
