Centre Orders X to Remove ‘Obscene, Sexually Explicit’ Content Generated via AI

New Delhi, Jan 2, 2026: The Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has directed social media platform X to immediately remove and disable content that is obscene, nude, indecent, or sexually explicit, particularly content generated or shared through AI tools like Grok.

The order, issued under the Information Technology Act, 2000, and the IT Rules, 2021, comes after reports of misuse of Grok AI by users to create fake accounts and generate derogatory or vulgar images and videos of women, which the government said were being used to indecently denigrate them.

Key directives from MeitY include:

  • Immediate removal or disabling of access to unlawful content on Grok AI.
  • Action against offending users, accounts, and content.
  • Submission of a detailed action taken report (ATR) within 72 hours of the order.

The ministry cited a serious failure in platform-level safeguards and enforcement mechanisms, stating that such misuse of AI violates applicable laws.

This intervention follows concerns raised by Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, who highlighted increasing incidents of AI-generated vulgar photos of women circulating on X, prompting urgent action from the government.

MeitY emphasized that this move is aimed at preventing the generation and uploading of obscene and sexually explicit content, ensuring compliance with laws on decency and online safety.
