Avon Medical Practice has officially launched its new Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a significant addition aimed at enhancing its critical care capabilities. The N200 million facility, located in the hospital’s newly extended building, is designed to manage high-acuity cases that require advanced monitoring and specialized intervention.
Tackling Medical Tourism
This new ICU represents a strategic move to reduce medical tourism, offering world-class healthcare services locally in Nigeria. By providing state-of-the-art facilities, Avon Medical Practice aims to meet the demand for advanced medical care that typically sees Nigerians seeking treatment abroad.
The facility operates 24/7 with a dedicated team comprising three intensive care physicians, three critical care nurses, three nursing assistants, and on-call specialists, all led by a Consultant Intensivist. The unit is equipped to handle severe respiratory failure, post-operative complications, sepsis, cardiac emergencies, and multi-organ dysfunction.
State-of-the-Art Equipment and Facilities
The upgraded ICU features cutting-edge equipment designed to provide optimal care. This includes mechanical ventilators with multi-mode capabilities, continuous vital-signs patient monitors, infusion systems with multiple infusion pumps and syringe drivers, a defibrillator with backup pads, ECG machines, blood warmers, and specialist ICU beds with pressure-relieving air mattresses. The facility also boasts a medical-grade air-filtration system, a specialized patient-transport system, and a low-pressure bedding system to prevent bed sores.
Dr. Akinbiyi Oke, the CEO of Avon Medical Practice, emphasized the significance of this new addition. “The commencement of ICU operations at our No. 6 Building reflects our commitment to excellence in healthcare delivery. This N200 million investment demonstrates our resolve to bridge the gap in specialized healthcare access and manage critical emergencies and complex medical cases with precision.”
Expert Care and International Best Practices
Dr. Olubunmi Salako, the Head of Clinical Services, highlighted the extensive training the ICU team has undergone in advanced life support and critical care protocols. “With this upgrade, we are equipped to deliver evidence-based care using international best practices. This ensures that every patient receives expert attention around the clock,” she said.
The ICU is accessible through the Accident & Emergency Department and serves both private-paying and insured patients.
Commitment to World-Class Healthcare
Avon Medical Practice is a 50-bed multi-specialty healthcare provider, known for delivering exceptional patient care. The hospital offers a range of services, including a state-of-the-art dialysis center, trusted pharmacy and laboratory services, and a full-service hospital with multiple on-site clinics.
The addition of the ICU underscores the hospital’s commitment to providing affordable, world-class healthcare services within Nigeria. Since its establishment, Avon Medical Practice has remained dedicated to improving healthcare access and outcomes, making high-quality medical care available to Nigerians and beyond.
