Legendary singer-songwriter Barry Manilow has announced he will undergo surgery to remove a cancerous spot on his lung, discovered during a routine MRI. The 82-year-old musician, famed for hits like Copacabana, Could It Be Magic, and Mandy, shared the news on Instagram, describing the early detection as “pure luck.”
Early Detection Following Bronchitis
Manilow revealed that the cancerous spot was discovered after he experienced weeks of bronchitis, followed by a relapse lasting an additional five weeks. Although he had returned to performing at the Westgate Las Vegas, his doctor recommended an MRI to ensure his lung health.
He explained:
“Even though I was over the bronchitis and back on stage… my wonderful doctor ordered an MRI just to make sure that everything was OK. The MRI discovered a cancerous spot on my left lung that needs to be removed. It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was found so early. That’s the good news.”
No Chemotherapy or Radiation Expected
Barry Manilow emphasized that doctors do not believe the cancer has spread, and he will not require chemotherapy or radiation. He joked about his recovery plans, stating:
“So that’s it. No chemo. No radiation. Just chicken soup and I Love Lucy reruns.”
He also reminded fans of the importance of early detection:
“If you have even the slightest symptom, get tested.”
Upcoming Surgery and Recovery
Manilow confirmed he will undergo surgery to remove the spot after completing his current run of concerts. He anticipates needing approximately one month to recover, during which his arena concerts scheduled for January will be rescheduled.
Despite the interruption, he expressed optimism about returning to performing, saying he is “counting down the days” until he can be back on stage.
