Thiruvananthapuram: BJP leader and former Kerala DGP R. Sreelekha, who won the Sasthamangalam ward in the recent Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation elections, addressed speculation over her being overlooked for the mayor’s post, saying she respects the party’s decision and will focus on her role as a councillor.
Promise of Mayor Post
Sreelekha revealed that while contesting the civic polls, she had been promised the mayor’s post by the party leadership. She explained that she had been hesitant to contest initially and was asked to oversee campaigns for 10 other BJP candidates as she also held the post of state vice-president. She said, “It felt like I would be chosen as the mayor candidate if we won. But at the last minute, something changed. VV Rajesh was chosen as he could be a better mayor, and Ashanath as deputy mayor.”
Clarification on Feelings
Earlier, Sreelekha’s departure from the council hall immediately after the mayoral election had led to rumours that she was unhappy with the party. She later clarified her stance, stating, “I don’t feel cheated. I am happy and I want to serve as a councillor for the next five years.” She emphasized that she respects the central leadership’s decision and is committed to the responsibilities of her ward.
No Plans for Assembly Polls
The 65-year-old leader also ruled out contesting the upcoming Assembly elections, despite her name being mentioned in connection with the Vattiyoorkavu Assembly constituency. “My focus right now is on developing the Sasthamangalam ward. The party has not spoken to me about fighting the Assembly elections,” she said.
Sreelekha’s remarks reaffirm her dedication to local governance and her willingness to prioritize civic duties over political ambitions, even after being promised the mayoral post.
