In the wake of heightened security following Monday’s deadly Red Fort car blast in Delhi, authorities on Wednesday dealt with a bomb scare at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. The incident, later confirmed as a hoax, briefly escalated tension at one of India’s busiest aviation hubs.
According to Delhi Police, the fire brigade received a call around 4 PM regarding a possible explosive device at T3. Simultaneously, an Air India Express flight to Varanasi received a separate security threat. In line with established protocols, a Bomb Threat Assessment Committee appointed by the government was immediately notified.
Investigation and Response
Following preliminary checks, Delhi Police confirmed that no explosive materials were found at the terminal. The scare was linked to a threat email received on IndiGo airline’s grievance portal, which mentioned multiple airports, including Delhi, Chennai, and Goa. Authorities conducted precautionary inspections at all specified locations to ensure passenger safety.
An Air India Express spokesperson said, “All necessary security procedures were promptly initiated. The flight landed safely, all guests were disembarked, and the aircraft will only be released for operations after mandated security checks are completed.”
Context: Security Alert After Red Fort Blast
The bomb scare comes amid a period of heightened vigilance in Delhi and other parts of India following the Red Fort car explosion on Monday evening, which claimed at least 10 lives and injured several others. Investigators are still probing the cause of the blast but have reportedly identified multiple terror links connected to the owner of the Hyundai i20 involved in the incident, which exploded near the Lal Quila Metro Station.
Authorities have warned the public against panic and stressed that all airport and airline security measures are being strictly enforced in the aftermath of the blast. Delhi Police and airport security teams have increased surveillance, baggage checks, and passenger screening to prevent any potential threats from materializing.
Precautionary Measures
- Enhanced screening at all entry points and checkpoints at airports.
- Coordination between Delhi Police, CISF, and airline security teams for real-time threat assessment.
- Monitoring of emails, calls, and social media messages that could indicate potential security breaches.
While no explosives were found, officials emphasized the need for continued vigilance. “Even in cases that turn out to be hoaxes, these alerts are treated seriously to safeguard passengers and infrastructure,” a senior Delhi Police officer said.
This episode underscores the sensitive security environment in the capital following high-profile terror-related incidents. Authorities continue to monitor all possible threats to ensure that aviation operations and public safety remain uncompromised.
