President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency on the training facilities for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other internal security agencies. The move comes amid growing concern over the outdated and deteriorating conditions of these institutions.
The announcement was made by Enugu Governor and Chairman of the NEC Ad-hoc Committee on Security Training Overhaul, Peter Mbah, during an on-the-spot assessment of facilities in Lagos. He was accompanied by Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, Secretary of the Committee and former IGP Alkali Usman Baba, and AIG in charge of the Special Protection Unit (SPU) Olatunji Disu.
Governor Mbah revealed that the committee has a 30-day deadline to submit a comprehensive report to the National Economic Council (NEC) for urgent action.
According to Mbah, President Tinubu expressed concern over the obsolete infrastructure being used to train security personnel expected to uphold human dignity in their duties to Nigerians. He added that Tinubu issued the mandate at the last NEC meeting held on October 23, emphasizing that the current state of security training institutions is incompatible with his vision of a $1 trillion economy within five years, and stressed the need for modernization.
Details are still emerging, and further updates are expected as the 30-day review progresses.
