BREAKING: Senate President Akpabio Hospitalised in London After Collapse, Misses Key Budget Session

Senate President Godswill Akpabio is currently receiving medical treatment in a hospital in London, United Kingdom, after collapsing earlier this month, sources from the National Assembly have told SaharaReporters.

According to insiders, Akpabio “collapsed on the 10th of December and was rushed to London in a private jet provided by billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote.” This marks the second time the Senate President has been flown abroad for medical attention, raising concerns about his health and capacity to continue leading the upper legislative chamber.

Absence From Official Duties

Akpabio’s hospitalization has kept him away from key official engagements, including the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) interactive session held on Wednesday. He was represented at the session by Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi, confirming his inability to attend in person.

A source familiar with the situation revealed that medical experts attending to Akpabio have advised him to reduce his workload, with some briefings suggesting that doctors have recommended he consider stepping down from the Senate to focus on his health.

“Doctors are advising him to step down from the Senate to attend to his health,” one source said.

Akpabio’s absence was notably felt during the MTEF and FSP session, a critical engagement where the executive and legislature review Nigeria’s medium-term fiscal and economic plans.

Support From Colleagues

Multiple senators reportedly traveled to London to check on Akpabio’s condition. A source disclosed, “A number of senators have gone to visit me,” indicating the high level of concern among lawmakers.

Additionally, aides have been coordinating logistical arrangements for his movement, with one source noting, “One of the aides just told me now that they are going to pick the guy from the airport.”

Last Public Appearance

Senate President Akpabio’s last public appearance was on December 9, 2025, during a plenary session where the Senate approved President Bola Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin following an attempted coup.

Akpabio emphasized the importance of the decision for regional security, stating, “An injury to one is an injury to all,” highlighting Nigeria’s duty to support ECOWAS partners in maintaining peace and stability in West Africa.
