A new biography of former President Muhammadu Buhari has shed light on why he did not publicly endorse a preferred successor during the 2022 All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary.
The book, “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari”, authored by Dr. Charles Omole, Director General of the Institute for Police and Security Policy Research (IPSPR), was officially presented in Abuja on Monday.
At the event, former Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, revealed that Buhari’s decision to remain silent was a deliberate security strategy intended to protect lives and maintain unity within the ruling party.
“In those months, knives were out; politically and, as security professionals know too well, sometimes literally. To name an anointed heir would be to paint a target on a human being and foreclose a process designed to distribute risk,” Bichi explained.
He stressed that Buhari’s silence was often misinterpreted as indifference, but it was actually aimed at preserving a fragile equilibrium within APC and safeguarding potential successors from political and security threats.
Bichi also addressed why Buhari did not reverse the removal of Lawal Daura as DSS Director General by then Acting President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo during Buhari’s medical leave.
“Buhari believed that overturning the decision would undermine the authority of the acting president and threaten institutional stability. He saw any reversal as an insult to his vice and the chain of command,” Bichi said.
The former DSS chief described Buhari as a disciplined leader who prioritized evidence, professionalism, and restraint over political pressure or personal gain. He consistently demanded proof before acting and resisted unverified claims, allowing security agencies to operate professionally.
Bichi emphasized that Buhari’s approach reinforced his belief that public office is a trust, not a personal privilege, and demonstrated a commitment to institutional integrity rather than political theatrics.
The biography presentation was attended by President Tinubu, Gambian President Adama Barrow, governors, ministers, diplomats, traditional rulers, and members of Buhari’s family.
