Colgate-Palmolive Tolaram Advocates Increased Research on Fluoride for Oral Health

Colgate-Palmolive Tolaram has emphasized the need for evidence-based research on fluoride to improve dental care outcomes, reaffirming its commitment to advancing oral health in Nigeria.

The announcement came during a Colgate-sponsored symposium at the 22nd Annual Scientific Conference and General Meeting of the International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR), Nigerian Division, themed “Fluoride in the Spotlight: Cavities Prevention and the Ongoing Debate.”

Experts Highlight Fluoride Benefits

Dental and public health experts, including Professor Omolara Uti (University of Lagos) and Dr. Afolabi Oyapero (Lagos State University College of Medicine), led discussions on fluoride’s safety and effectiveness in preventing tooth decay.

Dr. Oyapero noted that consistent use of fluoride-based products can reduce dental caries by 25% to 70%, depending on formulation and usage, and called on policymakers to implement research-backed fluoride regulations tailored to Nigeria’s unique conditions.

Professor Uti described fluoride as a major public health achievement and stressed the importance of bridging the gap between science and public understanding.

“Fluoride does not cause cancer, and science supports its safety and efficacy. Our advocacy is not just scientific—it is a moral commitment to ensure oral health benefits reach everyone,” she said.

Colgate Showcases Oral Care Innovation

The conference also featured a Colgate product presentation, with Dr. Ogechukwu MacJohnson introducing Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief toothpaste, formulated with zinc phosphate to strengthen enamel, protect against acid attacks, and relieve tooth sensitivity.

Promoting Scientific Excellence

Colgate-Palmolive Tolaram, in collaboration with IADR Nigeria, presented the 2025 Colgate Research Award for Preventive Oral Care, granting N2 million to Dr. Oluwadamilola Aigoro for his study on preventive oral care.

Through ongoing investments in research, education, and community awareness, Colgate continues to champion healthier smiles and stronger communities, underscoring its mission of science-based advocacy for a cavity-free future.
