Crystal Palace Could Sell Marc Guehi This Month if Conditions Are Right
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has confirmed that the club would be open to selling captain Marc Guehi during the January transfer window if his asking price is met. The 25-year-old England international is out of contract in the summer, and Manchester City have emerged as frontrunners for the defender’s signature.
Palace previously blocked a £35m move to Liverpool in the summer, but with Guehi’s contract expiring, the club risks losing him for nothing at the end of the season. City’s interest intensified following injuries to defenders Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias in Sunday’s draw against Chelsea, creating an urgent need for reinforcements.
“I’m not naive,” Glasner told the Athletic and Times. “If a massive offer comes from City and Marc wants to do it, it will happen.”
European Interest in Guehi
Guehi has attracted attention from some of Europe’s top clubs. Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Atletico Madrid are reportedly monitoring the defender, all capable of negotiating a pre-contract agreement from this month for a free transfer in the summer.
Glasner emphasized the balance between sporting and financial priorities. “If you’re just valuing sports, everyone in the club will say Marc has to stay,” he explained. “The chairman will tell you the same. But it’s not one-dimensional. If you see the financial situation, it’s very important. There will be a threshold where the club has to say it will happen – as long as Marc says ‘I want to leave,’ because the final decision is always with the player.”
Guehi’s Contributions to Palace
Guehi has been central to Palace’s recent success. He helped the club finish 12th in the Premier League last season, win the FA Cup to qualify for European football for the first time in the club’s history, and secure the Community Shield in August by beating Liverpool on penalties.
Currently, Palace are 14th in the Premier League and have progressed to the knockout play-offs of the UEFA Conference League. Glasner noted the importance of Guehi during these campaigns: “The chairman rejected many offers in the summer because we wanted to play a successful season and wanted to win the Community Shield. Therefore, Marc is important, and then he rejected the offer. The threshold at that time, the money we got offered was not above it. Maybe it was close, but it was not above.”
What This Means for the January Window
With Palace navigating Premier League survival, European competition, and squad injuries, Guehi’s potential departure could have major implications. The club may be forced to weigh financial gain versus sporting stability, especially if top-tier clubs like Manchester City or European giants come forward with offers that meet their valuation.
Guehi remains one of the Premier League’s most sought-after defenders, combining leadership, versatility, and technical ability, making him a pivotal figure for both Palace’s present and any potential suitors.
