Defence Minister Assures Nigerians: “We Will Overcome Security Challenges”

Nigeria is facing significant security challenges, but the nation will overcome them, Defence Minister General Christopher Musa (retd.) has assured, highlighting the resilience and dedication of the Armed Forces and other security agencies.

Speaking at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day service at the National Christian Centre in Abuja, Musa acknowledged threats such as terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping, but emphasized that Nigeria’s security forces remain committed to protecting the nation.

“Today is a moment of worship, reflection, and remembrance. We honour those who paid the supreme price in service to our country and celebrate those who continue to serve with courage and dedication,” the minister said. He also commended the families of servicemen and women for their sacrifices and assured that the welfare of armed forces personnel remains a priority.

Musa reaffirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to equipping and motivating the military and security agencies to discharge their duties professionally and effectively.

During the service, Most Rev. Uche Dan Okafor urged the military to remain neutral ahead of the 2027 general elections and resist the temptation to emulate recent coups in West Africa. He emphasized that fighting criminals and terrorists is a service to both the nation and God, predicting that sponsors and funders of insecurity in Nigeria will be exposed and disgraced.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, represented by Deputy Chief Whip Sen. Peter Nwebonyi, also paid tribute to the sacrifices of fallen heroes, noting that their blood has become the foundation for national unity, peace, and progress. Akpabio called on Nigerians to uphold religious freedom and democratic values as pillars of the nation’s democracy.

“Divine protection, strength, and wisdom are prayed for our officers and men of the Armed Forces and other security agencies who continue to risk their lives daily to safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty and unity,” Akpabio said.
