Delhi Braces for Cold Northwesterly Winds as Maximum Temperature Hovers Around 16-18°C

Updated: January 2, 2026

Delhi is set to experience intensifying cold northwesterly winds over the next few days, which are expected to keep daytime temperatures relatively low, with maximum temperatures ranging between 16-18°C. Shallow fog continues to envelop the city, while air quality has marginally improved to the lower end of the “very poor” category.

Temperature Trends and Forecast

On Thursday, the mercury in Delhi rose to 17.3°C, about two degrees below the normal for this period. Notably, on Wednesday, the city recorded a maximum temperature of just 14.2°C, the lowest since December 29, 2019, when the maximum had dipped to 13.3°C.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for dense to very dense fog in parts of Delhi on Friday, warning residents to exercise caution during morning travel. A yellow alert is in place for Saturday, indicating the likelihood of moderate to dense fog across the region.

Cold Winds and Future Temperature Dip

According to IMD and local weather experts, the cold northwesterly winds are expected to pick up speed during the day on Friday, maintaining lower daytime temperatures and gradually pushing the minimum temperatures downward.

“We expect cold northwesterly winds to strengthen from Friday. With no western disturbance likely until January 15, icy-cold winds will consistently blow across the plains. The minimum temperature will start dipping sharply from January 4 and could drop below 5°C by the second week of January,” said weatherman Navdeep Dahiya.

This sustained cold is expected to create prolonged winter conditions in Delhi and neighboring areas of Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh, potentially increasing health risks for the elderly, children, and people with respiratory conditions.

Air Quality Situation

The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was recorded at 311 at 8 am on Friday, a slight improvement from 380 (very poor) recorded at 4 pm on Thursday. Despite this minor improvement, air quality is expected to remain in the very poor category until at least January 11, according to the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi.

Shallow fog and low wind speeds are contributing to air pollution levels, trapping particulate matter near the ground. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, use masks when traveling, and keep windows closed during early morning hours to reduce exposure to pollutants.

Lack of Western Disturbance

Meteorologists noted that there is no western disturbance expected until mid-January, meaning Delhi will not receive any rain or snow that could potentially improve temperatures or air quality. The absence of a western disturbance is expected to maintain dry and cold conditions, which, coupled with the northwesterly winds, could keep nighttime temperatures exceptionally low.

Health and Safety Advisory

With the forecast of very cold winds and dense fog, authorities have urged citizens to take precautions against cold-related ailments. Common advisories include:

  • Wearing adequate winter clothing, especially covering head, hands, and feet.
  • Limiting exposure to early morning and late-night cold.
  • Keeping hydrated and consuming warm meals to maintain body heat.
  • Using air purifiers indoors to combat rising air pollution.
  • Exercising caution while driving or commuting, as dense fog can reduce visibility and increase the risk of accidents.

Outlook for Delhi-NCR

The forecast indicates that cold wave conditions are likely to persist across Delhi and neighboring regions until January 6, with dense fog expected in the mornings. Maximum temperatures will hover between 16-18°C, while minimum temperatures could sharply drop below 5°C by the second week of January.

IMD experts also cautioned that residents should be prepared for cold nights and fog-related travel disruptions, especially along major highways and arterial roads in the Delhi-NCR region.

In summary, Delhi faces a week of cold, foggy, and polluted conditions, with the combination of icy northwesterly winds and stagnant air creating challenging living conditions. Residents are advised to remain vigilant, follow health advisories, and exercise caution during commutes until weather conditions stabilize later in mid-January.
