New Delhi | October 14, 2025 — The Delhi Traffic Police on Tuesday reported a 2.5% decline in road crash deaths in the capital between January and September 2025 compared to the same period last year. Officials attributed the steady fall to “consistent and systematic efforts” using data-based, evidence-driven interventions and engineering improvementson city roads.
Fewer Fatalities, Fewer Crashes
According to the latest figures, 1,149 people lost their lives in road crashes up to September this year, down from 1,178during the same period in 2024. The number of fatal crashes also dropped by 2.9%, from 1,148 to 1,115.
“This continued reduction is a direct result of targeting risk factors and implementing life-saving measures at high-risk locations,” said Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ajay Chaudhry. “The Delhi Traffic Police remains committed to further reducing road crash deaths.”
Data-Led Road Safety Strategy
Officials said a multi-pronged approach is being implemented, combining data analysis, engineering interventions, and on-ground enforcement:
- 143 high-risk locations were identified across the city for safety redesigns, improved signage, and road repairs.
- Speed-calming measures have been proposed at over 30 sensitive areas near schools, colleges, and hospitals, including new speed breakers and safer pedestrian crossings.
- 3,600 traffic personnel have received specialized training in speed management and data-based enforcement, in collaboration with road safety experts.
Crash Research and Coordination
The Crash Research Cell of Delhi Police analyses each fatal crash to identify recurring blackspots. The Traffic Police Engineering Cell then recommends design and infrastructure changes to reduce risks.
Authorities noted that the city’s annual safety report has been renamed the Delhi Road Crash Report—replacing “accident” with “crash”—to reflect the global consensus that such incidents are preventable, not inevitable.
The Traffic Police also continue to work with civic and transport departments through District Road Safety Committees (DRSCs) and in line with Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety guidelines.
A Step Forward
While road safety remains a major challenge in Delhi—where over 1,200 lives are lost annually—officials say the current downward trend is encouraging.
The Delhi Traffic Police aims to expand its engineering and enforcement coordination to further lower fatalities in the coming year.
