Donald Trump Says Sean “Diddy” Combs Requested a Pardon, But He Won’t Grant It

President Donald Trump revealed that music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs reportedly asked him for a pardon for his prison sentence, but the former president has no plans to grant it. The revelation comes amid ongoing public interest in Combs’ legal situation and Trump’s high-profile stance on celebrity pardons.

Diddy’s Pardon Request

According to an exclusive report by The New York Times, Combs, 56, submitted a formal pardon request “through a letter” to Trump, 79. However, the former president confirmed to reporters that he does not intend to grant the request.

“Oh, would you like to see that letter?” Trump told The Times, though he did not produce it during the press briefing.

A spokesperson for the White House confirmed Trump’s comments to PEOPLE.

Background on Combs’ Conviction

Sean Combs was convicted in July 2025 on two prostitution-related charges and sentenced to 50 months in prison in October. He is scheduled for release on May 25, 2028, with credit for time served, according to Federal Bureau of Prisons records.

Trump previously weighed in on Combs’ case after the Bad Boy mogul was acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy charges in August 2025, noting:

“Well, he was essentially, I guess, sort of half-innocent… I don’t know what they do, still in jail or something. But he was celebrating a victory, but I guess it wasn’t as good of a victory.”

From Friendship to Hostility

The former president and Combs have a long history. Trump described their relationship as friendly during the late 1990s and early 2000s, attending events together and even being photographed together at various occasions.

However, Trump said their relationship changed when he entered politics:

“I got along with him great. Seemed like a nice guy. I didn’t know him well. But when I ran for office, he was very hostile. … It’s hard.”

Trump claimed Combs made “terrible statements” during the 2016 presidential campaign, which contributed to his decision not to consider the pardon.

“We’re human beings. We don’t like to have things cloud our judgment… Makes it more difficult, I’m being honest,” Trump added.

Public Interest and Legal Implications

The news marks another high-profile example of a celebrity seeking a pardon from a U.S. president. While Trump has previously discussed celebrity pardons and commutations, he emphasized that he is unlikely to make an exception for Combs.

Combs’ team has not publicly commented on Trump’s refusal, and the entertainer remains scheduled to serve the remainder of his sentence.
