The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly detained Pastor Kayode Olawoye, a cleric and civic activist known for campaigning for improved road infrastructure in Ogun State.
SaharaReporters learned that Pastor Olawoye was invited to the DSS office in Abeokuta on Monday for a discussion, marking his third invitation by the secret police. Unlike prior meetings, he was not allowed to leave and has since been placed in detention.
Pastor Olawoye has been vocal in recent weeks about the deteriorating conditions of major roads in the state, highlighting the daily hardships faced by commuters, traders, and residents. His activism, delivered through sermons, community engagement, and media appearances, has reportedly drawn the attention—and ire—of state authorities.
Residents have expressed concern over what they describe as a growing pattern of intimidation against citizens who highlight governance failures under Governor Dapo Abiodun. Critics argue that individuals speaking out against administrative lapses have faced harassment, arrests, or threats.
The detention follows a series of similar incidents, including the impeachment of a local government chairman, later nullified by the courts, and the criminal charges against social media influencer Adetoun Onajobi (@justadetoun) over alleged cyberbullying and spreading false information about the Ogun State government. Investigations revealed that Onajobi allegedly submitted a fabricated medical report to evade police questioning, resulting in the arrest of the doctor who prepared it.
Observers say these actions reflect a wider crackdown on dissent in the state, raising questions about the limits of civic advocacy and freedom of expression in Ogun.
