The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially endorsed President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as the candidate for the Chairmanship of the African Union (AU) in 2027. The decision was made during the 95th ordinary session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, held in Abuja, Nigeria, on December 12, 2025.
Details of the Endorsement
In a statement issued after the meeting, the ECOWAS Council of Ministers confirmed that the recommendation of President Mahama reflects the region’s commitment to supporting candidates from ECOWAS Member States in international organizations, including the African Union, to ensure the bloc’s interests are well-represented and protected on the global stage.
Statements from Ghana’s Foreign Minister
Speaking on the endorsement, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, Foreign Minister of Ghana, expressed gratitude for the support received from his ECOWAS counterparts. He said, “The ECOWAS Council of Ministers meeting in Abuja has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as the sole candidate from ECOWAS for Chairperson of the African Union when the rotating chairmanship gets to West Africa’s turn in 2027.”
Ablakwa went on to outline the next steps in the process, mentioning that the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS would adopt the declaration of support for President Mahama’s candidacy on Sunday, December 14, 2025. He further emphasized Ghana’s appreciation for ECOWAS’ confidence, stating, “Ghana is exceedingly grateful to ECOWAS for the confidence and support for our beloved visionary and Pan-African President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama.”
Strategic Importance of the Endorsement
This endorsement marks a significant step for Ghana and President Mahama as they prepare to seek the African Union Chairmanship. ECOWAS officials noted that Ghana‘s leadership on the African continent, particularly in Pan-African diplomacy, positions the country as a strong contender for this prominent role in 2027.
The endorsement also aligns with ECOWAS’ broader strategy to strengthen its presence in international and continental organizations. The recommendation is expected to enhance the bloc’s ability to influence global policy and promote its collective interests.
The Road Ahead
Once the Authority of Heads of State and Government formally adopts the endorsement, President Mahama will be positioned as the sole ECOWAS candidate for the AU Chairmanship in 2027. This development underscores the importance of regional unity within ECOWAS and represents a strategic move to increase the bloc’s influence at the continental level, particularly as the African Union prepares for its rotating chairmanship.
With the backing of ECOWAS, President Mahama’s candidacy is now poised to gain significant momentum as he continues to play a leading role in Pan-African diplomacy and the advancement of Africa’s collective goals.
