EFCC Fabricated Terror Financing Charges Against Bauchi Governor, Accuses Prof. Udenta

Former National Secretary of the defunct Alliance for Democracy (AD), Professor Udenta O. Udenta, has strongly accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of fabricating charges of terror financing against Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State.

Udenta made the accusations during an interview on Arise Television, which was monitored by DAILY POST on Tuesday. He expressed concern over the EFCC’s handling of the matter, describing the public pursuit of the governor as both unwarranted and damaging to his reputation.

EFCC’s Public Pursuit of Governor Mohammed

“No one is above the law. No governor or president is exempt from investigation, and prosecution can follow even after they leave office,” Udenta stated. “However, openly investigating a sitting governor, especially through media channels, can detract from effective governance within the state.”

Udenta criticized the EFCC for continuously bringing up terror financing charges against Governor Mohammed in the media. According to him, such actions have severely tarnished the governor’s image, with global ramifications.

“The EFCC’s relentless pursuit of Bala Mohammed through the media, coupled with the wrongful criminalization of his character, is deeply troubling,” Udenta continued. “His name is being dragged through the mud in connection with terror financing, and this is not just a national issue, it has international consequences.”

A Call for Discretion in Investigations

Referring to previous court proceedings, Udenta pointed out that a judge had instructed the EFCC to bring concrete evidence before the court three times. “The EFCC has repeatedly manufactured terror financing charges overnight and cast a sitting governor’s name into disrepute,” he said. “Such investigations could be handled quietly and discreetly, especially at the end of his tenure. Publicly dragging his name through these baseless charges is harmful and unnecessary.”

Udenta concluded by stressing that while the law must take its course, there must be a fair process to ensure that public officials are not unfairly targeted for political reasons.
