The Chief Judge of Enugu State, Hon. Justice A. R. Ozoemena, has sworn in 27 senior legal practitioners as Notaries Public of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Enugu State High Court Complex, following their appointment by the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
The exercise came after the CJN approved the instruments of oath for the appointees. Prior to the ceremony, the lawyers were formally notified through letters issued by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, indicating that the approved oath instruments had been forwarded to the Chief Judge of Enugu State for administration.
A Notary Public is a public officer appointed to serve as an impartial witness in the execution of important legal documents, helping to prevent fraud and ensure authenticity. Their duties include witnessing and authenticating signatures, administering oaths and affirmations, certifying documents, attesting to affidavits and statutory declarations, and notarising legal, commercial, and official documents.
Notarisation confers legal credibility and public trust on documents, particularly those relating to court processes, property transactions, powers of attorney, and international or official filings. In Nigeria, Notaries Public are appointed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria under the provisions of the Notaries Public Act and are typically senior legal practitioners of considerable standing at the Bar.
