Family, Hospital Clash Over Woman’s Death Hours After Childbirth in Lagos

The family of Mrs. Akubo Lovelyn John and Gynescope Specialist Hospital, Lagos, are embroiled in a bitter dispute following her death just hours after giving birth.

The John family has accused the hospital of negligence, alleging that medical staff delayed transferring Mrs. John to another facility despite her deteriorating condition. They claim that five pints of blood were transfused without identifying the source of persistent internal bleeding, and that the delay contributed to her passing.

In contrast, the hospital’s management, represented by Prof. Jude Okohue, rejected the claims, stating that the patient was closely monitored, stabilized, and that two staff members even donated blood to save her. Okohue emphasized that referrals are only made after patient stabilization to avoid further risk.

Mrs. John’s husband, Mr. Justice John, recounted that his wife delivered via spontaneous vaginal delivery on 3rd December 2025, with the baby weighing 4.2kg—a case of fetal macrosomia. He alleged that shortly after delivery, she began internal bleeding, became unconscious, and was only later referred to a government hospital, during which she reportedly fell while being moved.

The family has called for a formal investigation by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and Lagos State authorities, stressing that the autopsy and CCTV footage should be scrutinized to determine what happened. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed support for the family and is advocating for a thorough probe.

The hospital maintains that it acted professionally, highlighting that the bleeding was unusual and not directly related to the pregnancy, and reaffirmed its willingness to cooperate with any official inquiry.

The incident has sparked debates on maternal care and hospital accountability in Lagos, raising questions about patient safety and emergency response in private healthcare facilities.
