Former University of Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore is scheduled to be arraigned on Friday, December 12, 2025, while remaining in custody following an alleged assault and allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
Moore Fired by Michigan Following Investigation
Moore, 39, was dismissed by the University of Michigan on Wednesday, December 10, after athletic director Warde Manuel announced that the school found “credible evidence” he had engaged in an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.” The termination was effective immediately.
Following his firing, Moore was detained by police in Saline, Michigan, and turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for further investigation. He was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail, where he remains in custody pending his upcoming court appearance.
Alleged Assault Investigation
The Pittsfield Township Police Department reported that a suspect had been taken into custody in connection with an “alleged assault.” While authorities have not yet specified charges, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office indicated that a decision on potential criminal charges would not be made as of Thursday, December 11.
“The matter involving Mr. Moore remains under active investigation by law enforcement, and as a result, we do not expect charging decisions or an arraignment today,” the prosecutor’s office told ESPN.
Interim Head Coach Named
In the wake of Moore’s firing, associate coach Biff Poggi has been appointed interim head coach for the Michigan Wolverines. Moore had taken over as head coach in January 2024 after Jim Harbaugh’s departure, following the team’s first national championship in more than two decades. Prior to becoming head coach, Moore served as Michigan’s offensive coordinator and initially joined the program as tight ends coach in 2018.
Uncertainty Surrounds Michigan Football Program
Moore’s arrest and dismissal have left the Michigan football program facing uncertainty, both on and off the field. Players, staff, and fans are awaiting further developments as the investigation continues, and attention now turns to Friday’s arraignment and any potential charges against the former coach.
The situation underscores the challenges collegiate programs can face when leadership changes are sudden and surrounded by controversy, placing added pressure on interim coaching staff and student-athletes.
