Google has published its annual Year in Search report, revealing what Nigerians were most curious about in 2025 — from politics and global conflicts to music, slang, and lifestyle trends.
The data, released on Thursday, highlights how Nigerians turned to Google to follow major political events, understand viral culture moments, and pay tribute to national and global figures who passed away.
Politics, Losses, and Global Events Dominate Search
Senator Natasha Akpoti emerged as the most searched Nigerian personality, reflecting the heightened political interest surrounding her activities in 2025.
The Israel–Iran conflict, the U.S. elections, and the deaths of former President Muhammadu Buhari, football legend Peter Rufai, and Pope Francis also triggered major spikes in search activity.
Entertainment: Nigerian Music Leads the Way
Music remained a major driver of online engagement.
The most searched song of 2025 was:
- “Oluwatosin (Jesus Is Enough)” – Tkeyz ft Steve Hills,
followed by - “Joy Is Coming” – Fido
- “With You” – Davido ft Omah Lay
In film and TV, Nigerian cinema dominated. Kemi Adetiba ranked among the most searched personalities due to the massive popularity of her series To Kill a Monkey, which became Nigeria’s top trending local series of 2025.
Online Culture: Viral Words and Curiosity
The most asked question in Nigeria was:
“What is Labubu?” — inspired by a viral online character.
Searches for the meaning of “Achalugo”, popularised by the YouTube hit Love in Every Word, also spiked sharply.
Food: A Blend of Local & Global Recipes
Nigerians showed increased interest in recipes ranging from chinchin, sausage rolls, and asun rice to more global favourites like lasagna, hummus, and Pornstar Martini.
Google noted that the list reflects Nigeria’s evolving tastes and digital engagement.
“The 2025 Year in Search is more than just data; it’s a vibrant, unfiltered mirror of our collective attention,”
said Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications & Public Affairs Manager for West Africa.
