JUST IN: Cross River APC Chairman Alphonsus Eba Impeached

The Cross River State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has removed its chairman, Alphonsus Ogar Eba, following an overwhelming vote of no confidence by members of the State Executive Committee (SEC).

Eba’s impeachment on Thursday was endorsed by 30 out of 32 SEC members, after months of internal grievances including allegations of financial mismanagement, authoritarian leadership, and the prolonged closure of the state party secretariat.

With his removal, the SEC directed Deputy Chairman Ntufam Ekum Ekok Ojogu to immediately take over as Acting Chairman, pending formal ratification by the APC National Secretariat.

Party stakeholders said the decision became necessary to prevent a further breakdown of unity within the state chapter.

“Crisis reached a tipping point” — Party chieftains

Chief Kelvin Njong, APC Chairman in Boki and spokesperson for the 18 local chapter chairmen, said the impeachment followed extensive consultations and petitions sent to national leaders.

He described the development as a corrective step aimed at stabilising the party ahead of future political engagements.

Ojogu: “My doors are open — it’s time to rebuild”

After taking the oath of office, Acting Chairman Ojogu pledged to reopen the party structures, reconcile aggrieved members, and restore transparency.

“All grievances must be set aside so we can rebuild. All entitlements owed will be addressed. My doors and phone lines are open 24/7. It is time to sheath our swords,” he said.

Ojogu also praised ward leaders, polling unit coordinators, and volunteers for sustaining the APC at the grassroots throughout the internal crisis. He promised to work closely with Governor Bassey Edet Otu to strengthen the administration’s “People First” agenda.

Stakeholders move into strategy session

Following the inauguration, SEC members and chapter chairmen proceeded into a closed-door meeting to map out restructuring plans and prepare a detailed report for submission to the national leadership.

The development represents one of the most significant leadership shake-ups in the Cross River APC in recent years and is seen as a bid to restore discipline, unity, and credibility within the party ahead of upcoming political contests.
