Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada – November 13, 2025 – Diplomats from the Group of Seven (G7) countries have once again reaffirmed their collective commitment to achieving the complete denuclearization of North Korea, condemning Pyongyang’s ongoing nuclear and ballistic missile programs as a threat to international peace and security. The announcement came in a joint communique issued at the conclusion of the two-day G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting held in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.
Representatives from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union emphasized the urgency of addressing North Korea’s escalating nuclear ambitions while highlighting the regime’s reliance on illicit activities, such as cryptocurrency thefts, to fund its weapons programs.
“We strongly condemned the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs and reaffirmed our unwavering commitment to the complete denuclearization of the DPRK,” the joint statement read.
The DPRK, as North Korea is officially known, has maintained a firm stance against denuclearization since formally declaring itself a nuclear-armed state in 2022. While North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently expressed a willingness to resume diplomatic talks with the United States, he made it clear that discussions regarding the dismantling of the country’s nuclear arsenal remain off the table.
“If the United States abandons its vain obsession with denuclearization, acknowledges reality, and desires genuine peaceful coexistence with us, there is no reason why we should not sit down with the United States,” Kim said in a speech to the North Korean parliament.
The situation is further complicated by statements from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently referred to North Korea as “sort of a nuclear power,” publicly acknowledging the country’s substantial nuclear arsenal. Such remarks have raised concerns among international policymakers about the consistency of U.S. messaging on North Korea’s nuclear threat.
G7’s Unified Stance on Global Security and Military Aid
In addition to denuclearization, the G7 ministers addressed North Korea’s military support to Russia and other global security concerns. The statement strongly condemned Pyongyang, Iran, and China for providing military aid and dual-use technology to Russia, which is actively engaged in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
Seoul’s National Intelligence Service estimates that North Korea has sent weapons and around 15,000 troops to Russia since 2024, primarily to help recapture territory lost in the Kursk Province. In return, North Korea is believed to be receiving financial aid and advanced military technology, further bolstering its illicit weapons programs.
Recent reports from the state-run Korean Central News Agency indicate that a delegation of Russian military officials visited Pyongyang last week to discuss strengthening military cooperation between the two countries, underscoring ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.
G7’s Broader Commitment to Regional Stability
The G7 ministers also reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine, highlighting the alliance’s commitment to international law, security, and human rights. By condemning North Korea’s continued nuclear development and support for Russia, the G7 seeks to reinforce the message that unlawful military activity and nuclear proliferation will not be tolerated.
Analysts note that the G7’s strong stance is intended not only to deter Pyongyang from further nuclear escalation but also to send a clear signal to China and Iran, both of which have been implicated in supporting Russia’s military operations through arms transfers and dual-use technology.
As tensions on the Korean Peninsula persist, the international community continues to monitor North Korea’s nuclear capabilities and illicit funding mechanisms, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic pressure and multilateral cooperation to achieve lasting peace and security in East Asia.
