Aizawl: The death toll from a gastroenteritis outbreak in Kakhichhuah village, Lawngtlai district of south Mizoram, has risen to six, officials said on Sunday. The outbreak, a water-borne disease, is believed to have been introduced by visitors from neighboring Myanmar.

Kakhichhuah, a small hamlet of around 130 families along the Myanmar border, reported the outbreak on November 4. Currently, 84 people are infected, according to Dr. Malsawmtluanga, medical officer at Lawngtlai district hospital.

A medical team has been stationed in the village since November 11 to monitor and contain the outbreak. Most cases were reported from households lacking proper drinking water sources. Dr. Malsawmtluanga stressed the importance of using boiled or purified water and maintaining food and household hygiene. He advised villagers to watch for symptoms such as stomach pain and diarrhea and consult health workers immediately if they appear.

The outbreak has also affected Siaha district in south Mizoram, where three deaths were reported as of November 13.

Lawngtlai Deputy Commissioner Donny Lalruatsanga visited Kakhichhuah on Sunday to review response measures. The village has been declared a containment zone, with movement across the Myanmar border restricted for two months. Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel. Essential medical supplies are being provided, and health workers have been instructed to remain fully alert and uphold strict hygiene practices.
