Google is making a bold move to establish a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) data centre on the remote Australian territory of Christmas Island, situated in the Indian Ocean. The ambitious project comes after a strategic cloud partnership was signed earlier this year with the Australian Department of Defence, signaling a significant investment in both technology and regional security.

Christmas Island, located approximately 350 km south of Indonesia, has increasingly gained attention from defence experts due to its strategic location. Analysts suggest that the island could serve as a critical forward monitoring point for Chinese naval and submarine activity in the Indian Ocean, positioning it as a pivotal location in regional security frameworks.
Recent multinational military exercises involving Australian, U.S., and Japanese forces have highlighted Christmas Island’s potential role as a forward command and control hub. Experts note that the integration of AI into military operations, particularly for uncrewed surveillance and targeting missions, could be significantly enhanced by a local data centre.

Google’s Plans and Infrastructure Development

Additionally, Google has applied for environmental approvals to build the first subsea cable connecting Christmas Island to Darwin in northern Australia, where U.S. Marine Corps personnel are stationed part of the year. The cable, to be installed by SubCom, a U.S. undersea cable company, will significantly increase data bandwidth and communication reliability, crucial for AI-driven applications.
Experts highlight that subsea cables are far more reliable than satellites, which could be jammed in a regional conflict. This infrastructure ensures a secure, high-capacity communication channel for both commercial and defense applications.

“Christmas Island is well-positioned to monitor key shipping lanes, including the Sunda Strait, Lombok Strait, and Malacca Straits. Its location is critical for regional maritime security.”
