Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State – The Ekiti State High Court has sentenced three individuals to death by hanging for robbing an 87-year-old woman.
Justice Lekan Ogunmoye handed down the sentence to Shadrack Apos (30), Lucky Akpos (33), and Adunola Precious (24) following their conviction for conspiracy and armed robbery.
The defendants were arraigned on August 19, 2024, on charges of conspiring to rob Victoria Folorunso of ₦147,000 and a wristwatch on June 12, 2024, at Ifaki Ekiti. At the time of the robbery, the defendants were reportedly armed with a gun and a plank, in violation of Sections 421 and 321(2)(b) of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.
In her testimony, the victim recounted how she was attacked in her bedroom around 1:00 a.m. “One held a gun to my forehead while the other had a plank,” she said. She said the robbers took ₦100,000 from under her mattress and another ₦47,000 from her underwear, along with a wristwatch given to her by her children. Although they initially took her phone, it was later returned.
The victim added that the robbers threatened her with death if she reported them and instructed her to withdraw ₦3 million from her bank account the following day and hand it over to her house help, Adunola Precious, to deliver to them.
Prosecution witnesses and evidence, including the defendants’ statements, a search warrant, and a wooden gun, were presented to the court. The defendants were represented by lawyers Oluwatoyin Marcus and Mitchel Aribisala, each calling one witness in their defense.
In delivering judgment, Justice Ogunmoye noted that Precious Adunola facilitated the robbery by opening the door for the other two defendants. The court held that the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.
The judge sentenced all three defendants to death by hanging, stating, “May God have mercy on their souls.”
