
Jos, Plateau State – The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has confirmed the murder of Peter Mafuyai, a 22-year-old, 300-level Banking and Finance student, by his close friend, Nanpon Timnan David, a 200-level Agricultural Science student.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday at Mafuyai’s off-campus residence in Rusau, Farin Gada area of Jos North Local Government. According to reports, David hacked Mafuyai to death.
In a statement, University Registrar Dr. Rejoice Songden clarified that the tragedy occurred outside the university premises. She also conveyed the university’s condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
“The Management of the University of Jos has received with deep sadness the report of this unfortunate incident involving two students, which tragically resulted in the death of a 300-level student of the Department of Banking and Finance,” Dr. Songden said. “The deceased was allegedly murdered by his friend, Nanpon Timnan, a 200-level student of the Department of Agricultural Science.”
Dr. Songden assured that the university is fully cooperating with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and that justice is served. She emphasized that the incident occurred off campus, contrary to some media reports.
She also clarified that students were not in session at the time, as the 2024/2025 academic session had ended on August 30, and the new 2025/2026 session is set to begin November 10.
“We deeply regret this tragic development and assure parents, guardians, students, staff, and the general public that adequate security measures are in place to safeguard lives and property within the university vicinity,” Dr. Songden added.
The police have commenced investigations and are expected to release an official statement at the conclusion of their inquiry.
